The Stichting Afrikaanse Albino’s has been helping about 250 albinos in Kenya since 2008.
A project to support local distribution of sun block and the necessary instruction for albinos has been set up together with the Verkaart Development Team, an organisation that facilitates and supports structured projects in Kenya,.In March 2009 the Verkaart Development Team organised an Albino Awareness Day in de Kwale region.
The Stichting Afrikaanse Albinos also played a part in this day by providing 300 bottles of sun block as well as lip balm. Volunteer Manon van Oldenbarneveld, one of the organisers of this Albino Awareness Day, took the bottles and lip balms with her to Kenya and 94 albinos were helped that day. After this happening the foundation has given Kenya an official place in the distribution programme and since then the number of albinos receiving sun block has risen to over 250.
Distribution and instruction The cooperation with the Verkaart Development Team is being continued so that together we can improve the quality of life of as many albinos in Kenya as possible. Our aim is to send a container to Kenya twice a year. Our contacts in Kenya are Beasy Mgobe who Works for Verkaart in Ukunda, Momassa a social worker and Mohammed Almassi from the Eye Centre in Kwale, and they help with the local distribution of sun block, sun glasses, caps and clothing. They also organise instruction programmes in an attempt to reduce the prejudice among the local inhabitants.
