Project Mali

Since August 2005 the Stichting Afrikaanse Albinos provides sun block for albinos in Bamako and Sikasso in Mali. It started with a small group of albinos which has since grown to 300.

Distribution and instruction
Since 2008 the foundation ships a great number of bottles by air freight to Bamako, the capital city of Mali. The foundation has various local contacts that ensure that a considerable area of Mali is covered.

Local contact person Moussa Fofana of Bed & Breakfast Jatigiya picks the bottles up at the airport and the albinos can collect them from his house. He also takes care of the distribution to the other pick up points

Professor Somita Keita, head of Dermatology at the Dermatological Institution Marchoux in Bamako can also pick up their bottles there. He offers albinos a free consultation and gives them instruction as to how they can best protect themselves. In this way he has the opportunity to monitor the health of albinos and where he finds serious skin problems direct action can be taken. Other local contacts who have set up a distribution point are Joseph Traoré, who Works at the distribution point of SIAM in Bamako and Lamine Traoré, president of the Albino Associatie in Sikasso (a big city south of Bamako).).

It is important to be able to produce sun block in an African country because then the albinos are no longer dependant on donated bottles for the protection of their vulnerable skin. The Stichting Afrikaanse Albinos together with the Albino Association SIAM (Solidarité pour l'insertion des Albinos du Mali) is offering help in setting up and coordinating local production of sun block in Mali. Production takes place in a laboratory at the Dermatological Institution Marchoux in Bamako, which is active in the areas of skin cancer and  albinism
