Project Senegal

Since December 2004 the Stichting Afrikaanse Albinos provide sun block to almost 100 albinos in Senegal.

Through the photographer Erik Hijweege who once took photos of albinos in Senegal for his book ‘Noir’, the foundation was able to make contact with Fabineta Diop. She said ‘yes’ at once on being asked to organise the distribution of sun block. Her brother Mouhamadou Bambo Diop, an albino and president of the Association Nationale des Albinos du Sénégal (ANAS), also became involved in this project.

Distribution and instruction
Together brother and sister take care of the distribution of sun block in Dakar en Thies (70 km east of Dakar) as well as instruction for albinos. The albinos in Thies are organised around the ANAS community centre where Mouhamadou is active. Mouhamadou coördintes stocks and, when ANAS requests it, the foundation dispatches further goods, generally by air. When the opportunity arises sea transport is also used.

In order to achieve all this Nienke Sonneveld, together with Niek Sonneveld and Erik Hijweege were in Senegal from 28 December 2004 until 7 January 2005 and their trip was very successful! They were able to organise everything with Fabineta Diop and handed out the first 60 bottles of sun block. Since then the group of albinos has grown to 100 people. As well as dispatching sun block the foundation provides financial help to the  ANAS community centre in order to keep it going and to develop it further
