Project Zambia

The Stichting Afrikaanse Albinos started work in Zambia in early 2005 at a small school for blind and deaf children in Magwero, where 20 albino children were provided with sun block and instruction. This was set up by the chairman, Nienke Sonneveld.

Since 2008 160 albino children from the whole country have been helped through the cooperation with ZAMISE (Zambia Institute of Special Education). ZAMISE is a teachers training course in Lusaka, Zambia for specialist teachers. Students follow a 2 year course to become a specialist teacher after which they can teach children with a visual, auditory, mental or physical handicap at primary and secondary level. (in a total of 32 schools or units). This cooperation with ZAMISE has been facilitated in part by volunteer Nicole Faithfull who lived in Zambia for two years and got in touch with the foundation.

Distribution and instruction
The first shipment of sun block to ZAMISE was at the end of 2008 . Transport of sun block from the Netherlands takes place via DPA (Development Project Assistance). In Zambia the sun block is delivered to the organisation CHAZ in Lusaka.big_groep_kinderen_leraren_en_zusters_van_St_Mary's_in_Kawambwa The foundation maintains direct communication with their local contact person Mr. Lawrence Mumba, a teacher and also head of the ZAMISE department for visually handicapped children. He picks up the shipment and the goods are distributed by ZAMISE to the 32 schools and units in Zambia.  The distribution of sun block and the instruction is linked to the distribution of teaching school materials that ZAMISE carries out throughout Zambia
