It all started with Joyce Mussa. In May 2002 two medical students (Nienke Sonneveld and Kirsten de Boer) were visiting the town of Mangochi in Malawi to work in the local hospital. This is an excerpt from the letter that Joyce wrote at the time: "Thank you so much for the sun block that you sent. It is the best cream I have ever had! My face and arms are now as smooth as yours and I can be in the sun for hours without getting burnt. Everyone is asking me: what sort of cream are you using? Now no longer have a problem with the sun in Malawi!" What followed Two years later one of the students (Nienke Sonneveld) returned to Malawi. Of course she took some more sun block for Joyce with her but she also wanted to help more albinos so she took 25 more bottles which Joyce helped her to distribute. The enthusiasm of Joyce and the other albinos was indescribable! Then she set up a project, together with Joyce, to be able to continue helping the albino's in Malawi. It is unbelievable that something as ordinary to us as sun block can improve someone else’s quality of life so greatly! On return to the Netherlands the project received publicity in two national newspapers. This lead to the family Kuijt of Kuijt-beheer B.V. deciding to sponsor the initiation of the foundation. On 17 August 2004 the Stichting Afrikaanse Albinos was a fact! photo tag: The first committee of the foundation just after signing the articles of foundation at the notary’s office Photo tag: The cheque and a statuette from the Kuijt family. |
